Quote of the Day:
“One must avoid ambition in order to write. Otherwise something else is the goal: some kind of power beyond the power of language. And the power of language, it seems to me, is the only kind of power a writer is entitled too.”
– Cynthia Ozick

Where are those words? I started my computer this morning and then I found everything else to do in the house instead of writing. Michael was good enough to assist me in the moving stuff around. By the time I finished my chores I was tired.
My gripe today is about the U.S. Postal Service:
- First gripe is that service at the actual place of business is slow.
- The cost of postage keeps going up and yet the service doesn’t get any better.
- Since I have a post box, I occasionally get mail for other people. Normally I don’t think too much about it. But, the one that is my gripe currently is this one company which has the same box number that I have. I’ve talked to the postal clerks about. Their suggesting was to push it back through my box so the envelope falls to the floor. The next day I go in, the envelope is back in my box. My next step is I take the envelope home and circle the box number and write that it is the correct box. Then I circle the city (San Bernardino or San Diego) and the zip code and write that it is the wrong city and zip code. Now I pray the clerks get it.
- Either everything is too computerized or folks just aren’t paying attention.
The thing is I do like communicating with my computer. The computer is quick, easy and fast. On the other side I do like writing letters by hand. My friends whom I send letters to are happy to get something in the mail. So what is up with the postal service?

Strange as it may seem, we get excellent service in our location. We always know the local carrier by name — ever since the U.D. was about three and asked — and he’s good (an occasional sub is lazier). Not to mention, he *never* complains that he has to climb the steps to get to our mailbox.
At the post offices — the one that’s closest is not the one from which the carriers work — the service is as good as it can be, considering that so many customers don’t prepare everything before they get there. “I need another form because it’s going certified? I didn’t know that.”
On the other hand, my friend in Queens has the nastiest letter carrier, who won’t even give her time to answer the door (She’s 83 and lame…)
