Rain, rain, go away, come again another day.
Another day of rain and now the power is out. Actually, it went out last night at 9:36 p.m.
I never thought much about the power because it is never out that long. This storm took out some power lines and has done a number on the county.
I hate an all-electric house. Hot meals are not available. We thank our dear friend Dave – Hi Dave – for providing us with a few military rations and Michael prepared us a couple of meals. The meals (me-meatloaf and gravy; Michael had chicken chow mein) weren’t too bad and did fill us up. The refrigerator is off limits as well as the freezer. I believe we opened the fridge a couple of times but that was it. We have no heat, so Michael started a small fire and we covered up with blankets. Me, I had a blanket and the cats.
Luckily we do have a regular old phone for times as such as these and we could call out if we needed to. I also have a small radio that can run on batteries and so we listened to the various radio stations. Of course, not once did we tune in a station when it was giving the weather report. Michael did call the electric company and a recording told him that the power would be back on (hopefully) between 8 and 11 p.m.
Michael does some cleaning in his office; I clean off my side table by my chair. Then I went to reading my book “In a Family Way” and knocked off about a hundred pages. I think all four of us took naps.
With no power I cannot even check my e-mail. Thank heavens my laptop has a battery and I can type this entry.
Michael keeps asking if whether or not we need to get the boat out. If it keeps raining we may need it!

It’s times like those (no power) that I really get scared. What would life be like with no electrical power? I know people did it long ago but times are different, and our whole lives seem to revolve round power. We have electric cooking also and have to resort to salads when the power goes out which (touch wood) it doesn’t do very often here. I worry most about losing it while I’m working on the computer, and losing long passages of what I’d just typed. I really hate going back and having to re-type medical reports. So I am constantly saving my work.
Glad you are back in business. Give those kit-kats some scritches for me….
Hi Bex:
I know what you mean about how our lifestyles have come to rely on electricity. It must be a conspiracy! LOL. Those 20 hours did make me think. Luckily Michael and I just roll with what is and find stuff to keep ourselves entertained.

Yeah, I survived the ice storm of 1998. We were without power for two weeks in central Maine. Miserable, cold and grubby…melted ice for the animals to drink on my gas stove. Finally my neighbors got a generator and I hauled water from their house on a sled. The woods around my house looked like they had been through an artillery battle, nearly all the trees lost their tops and many large branches lower down.
No fun at all. Glad you got your power back before the food thawed.

Oh Sil, I do remember those ice storms in Maine. I remember hearing the limbs break because of the ice. No, I’m glad I live in California now.
